Durante la última década hubo un aumento dramático de los casos humanos de salmonelosis y campilobacteriosis en la mayoría de los países occidentales. Figuras de la investigación epidemiológica indican que alrededor del 10 por ciento de la salmonelosis humana y casi todos los casos de campilobacteriosis son causados por el consumo de carne de pollo contaminada.
